EU : 2011 - Key year for the Nabucco pipeline project

This year is crucial for the Nabucco pipeline project, because decisions to be taken in 2011 will have an important influence on future energy supplies to Europe.

"It is therefore necessary that the European Union to develop relations with potential source for Nabucco countries, such as Azerbaijan or Turkmenistan. Unlocking the untapped resources and their transportation to Europe will be items of major importance, as the Central and Western Europe will face with a considerable deficit in energy supply over the next two decades and gas prices will rise while domestic production decreased", said Dolza, spokesman for the Nabucco consortium.

According to representatives of the consortium, the pipeline would help diversify Europe's energy supply and ensure the transport of Caspian gas, through Turkey, on European Union market.

For this project benefits not only consumers in Europe, but also countries of transit and source regions of Central Asia.

"Nabucco welcomed visiting European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso and European Commissioner for Energy, Guenther Oettinger, in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, and assist in promoting the project".

Pipeline construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and the first delivery of gas is estimated to 2015.
