France announced it would close about half of the coal power stations by 2015, replacing them with gas installations, as part of the Copenhagen European agreement to reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2020.
RWE AG Germany, the largest carbon emitter in Europe, said it will not build new coal power plants, considering they aren’t efficient anymore. Great Britain will not build new coal plants without technology to capture carbon.
Vattenfall AB the largest installation in Scandinavia and one of the first which tested the CSC technology, managed to adapt the coal plants, such as that in Denmark, able to run on biomass instead of coal.
France plans to build two new nuclear plants to replace the two to be closed, and will decide whether they will continue to operate the reactors more than 30 years in safety or if they must be closed.
Most EU countries will increase the share of energy supplied from renewable sources and to compensate for the difference, will use efficient energy methods to reduce consumption.
