Skyline Solar announced the installation of a 22-kW project in Hawaii, two months after installing a concentrating photovoltaic unit of 80 kW in California.
Skyline produces a system that focuses sunlight on a PV cell. The company says it provides 10 times more energy per gram of silicon than traditional PV modules.
Another advantage of this system is that all parts are made in existing manufacturing processes, thus reducing the cost of adding these new components of the solar system.
Skyline was launched in 2009 by installing a series of medium-sized projects. The project of 80 kW, made in California in June made the city Nipton "first fully solar-powered city" said the company. (There are only 20 people living there).
Skyline systems are small compared to some of the largest installations of the CPV. SolFocus is the largest facility, a 1 MW system in California. Amonix has recently announced that it will develop a 30 MW project in Colorado.
Skyline was founded in 2007 and is led by veterans of solar energy. The company is funded by NEA, other VCs and strategic investors. The company has also received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate production.
